Camiguín

📍 Philippines

The island born of fire: volcanoes, waterfalls, hot springs, and natural beauty in one of the Philippines’ best-kept secrets.

Camiguín

Camiguin, known as "the island born of fire," is a small volcanic island north of Mindanao, covered in lush greenery and surrounded by clear waters. Despite its modest size, it boasts one of the highest concentrations of natural attractions in the Philippines. With a peaceful vibe, fresh mountain air, and the dramatic backdrop of volcanic peaks, Camiguin offers travelers a perfect mix of adventure and serenity.

Volcanoes and Historical Landmarks

  • Mount Hibok-Hibok: The most famous of Camiguin’s seven volcanoes, it can be climbed with a guide for panoramic island views.
  • Sunken Cemetery: Submerged by a volcanic eruption in 1871, this underwater cemetery is marked by a large cross and can be explored by kayak or snorkel.
  • Old Spanish Church Ruins: The remnants of a Spanish-era church destroyed by the same eruption, now surrounded by trees and mystery.

Waterfalls, Hot Springs, and Natural Pools

  • Katibawasan Falls: A 70-meter waterfall cascading down a lush cliffside.
  • Tuasan Falls: More rugged and less visited, perfect for a refreshing swim.
  • Ardent Hot Springs: Naturally heated pools at the base of Mt. Hibok-Hibok, ideal for relaxation after a day of exploring.
  • Soda Water Pool: A unique spring-fed pool with naturally carbonated water—one of a kind in the Philippines.

Beaches, Islands, and Snorkeling

  • White Island: A pristine white sandbar just offshore with stunning views of Camiguin’s volcanoes. Reachable by boat from Mambajao.
  • Mantigue Island: A small island with a marine sanctuary and eco trail. Great for snorkeling and diving.
  • Shoreline snorkeling: Several spots along the island’s coastal road offer easy access to reefs right from the beach.

Life on Camiguin

The island moves at a relaxed pace. There are no large resorts, but plenty of eco-lodges, guesthouses, and boutique stays. Mambajao is the main town, home to local markets, restaurants, and scooter rentals.

Getting Around

Renting a scooter is the best way to explore. The main coastal road loops around the island, offering scenic drives and easy access to most attractions.
